Born in Turkey in 1981, Istanbul native Ersin Karabulut began his career as an artist at the age of 16. He contributed to various magazines while studying graphic design at the Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University. In 2007, he co-founded Uykusuz, one of the most prestigious weekly humor magazines in Turkey. He is the author of nine graphic novels and compilations and has been published in Turkey, France, and Brazil. His work bears the influence of Franco-Belgian comics, Turkish satire magazines, and certain underground American comics. As one of the most respected Turkish comics creators, Karabulut has exhibited his work in his home country and around Europe and frequently teaches courses and participates in conferences on the topic of comics with various universities and institutions. His most recent work includes the expansive graphic memoir Journal inquiet d’Istanbul (Dargaud; Drawing on the Edge: Chronicles from Istanbul, Europe Comics), an insightful and captivating look into what it means—and what it costs—to pursue one’s dream in the face of repression.
